ATHENS, Greece — At least 18 migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean in an inflatable boat died after it capsized south of Crete, Greek authorities said Saturday.
A passing Turkish merchant vessel found the half-sunken craft on Saturday. Two people were rescued and a search was under way to locate others.
Greece is a key entry point to the European Union for people fleeing conflict and poverty in the Middle East, Africa and Asia, and deadly accidents are frequent. The short but hazardous route from Turkey’s coast to nearby Greek isles in dinghies or small boats, often in poor conditions, was once the main crossing until stepped-up patrols and alleged pushbacks reduced attempts. In recent months, arrivals from Libya to Crete have risen.
Authorities have not yet established the boat’s origin.
A Frontex ship and plane, a Greek Coast Guard helicopter and three merchant vessels are involved in the search operation.
