A suspect in the deadly car explosion near New Delhi’s Red Fort appeared in court on Monday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) said. The government has classified last week’s blast, which killed at least 10 people, as a terrorist incident.
The NIA named the court-presented suspect as Amir Rashid A. Investigators say he traveled from Indian-administered Kashmir to Delhi to help facilitate the purchase of the car that was later used as a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) to trigger the blast.
Late Monday, authorities also arrested another man identified as Jasir Bilal W. He is accused of providing technical support for terror attacks by modifying drones and attempting to make rockets in the period before the Red Fort explosion.
Officials have not disclosed motives or any organizational backing for the attack. The alleged suicide bomber has been identified as Umar Un N. According to the NIA, all three accused individuals are originally from Indian-administered Kashmir.
The region has seen deadly violence earlier this year, including an attack at the Pahalgam tourist site that killed mainly Hindu civilians. The Red Fort explosion is the first incident of mass violence in heavily guarded Delhi since 2011. Families of the victims have called for justice as investigations continue.
