An open U.S. Senate seat is the headline race in North Carolina’s statewide primary. Former Democratic governor Roy Cooper and former Republican National Committee chair Michael Whatley are both positioned strongly in their respective party contests. Several U.S. House primaries are also competitive, and recent redistricting has produced changes to some district maps that could affect outcomes.
If no candidate receives more than 30% support in a given contest, a runoff may be requested between the top two finishers; that runoff is scheduled for May 12. Voter registration deadlines and other participation rules apply—check North Carolina state election resources for specifics.
