Eight chicken sandwich makers entered, four clucked away with a victory and spot in the second round of USA TODAY’s Chicken Sandwich Bracket.
In honor of the fierce competition online between fast food chains over who boasts the best chicken sandwich, we created the bracket so readers could vote on Twitter for who should rule the roost.
In round one, the top seed Chick-fil-A easily took down Burger King in its matchup over best chicken sandwich, capturing 91% of the vote. Popeyes, whose latest chicken sandwich first ruffled all our feathers, has reason to cluck after taking 86% of the vote over McDonald’s.
Third-seeded Wendy’s captured nearly three-fourths of the vote in defeating Shake Shack, while KFC overcame Bojangles in our closest vote of the round: 60% to 40%.
Let’s take a look at round two:
Popeyes, Chick-fil-A, Wendy’s?: Vote on your pick for the best fast food chicken sandwich
1. Chick-fil-A vs. 4. KFC
Breakdown: This is the kind of matchup we love: Two chicken titans going head to head (or maybe it’s beak to beak). Chick-fil-A has been all about sandwiches for as long as it’s been in business (back in 1967). Kentucky Fried Chicken is known more for presenting fried chicken in a bucket than inside a bun, but it’s got a pretty solid selection of sandwiches. Also, this matchup is more interesting when you picture Colonel Sanders fighting a herd of cows.
2. Popeyes vs. 3. Wendy’s
Breakdown: The Popeyes sandwiches are so popular they are selling out everywhere. Is this what they mean by Louisiana fast? How long before these appear on eBay? One NBC reporter in DC said a man offered him $10 for his sandwich. People are going to start reselling these like concert tickets.
As for Wendy’s, home to the beloved spicy chicken nuggets, they have a pretty robust selection of chicken sandwiches. Barbecue? Check. Avocado BLT? Obviously. Homestyle bacon jalapeño? Yes, and also quite impressive. Unfortunately, only one can win.
