Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day and beyond

Moms, teachers, nurses and military, May is your month.

Restaurants and businesses have special deals and freebies for Mother’s Day, National Teacher Appreciation Day, National Nurses Week and Memorial Day.

There’s also plenty of savings for the rest of us with Cinco de Mayo at the start of the month and National Burger Day May 28.

Here are some of the big days for free food and discounts along with ongoing specials, available at participating locations. To be on the safe side, always check with your closest location before heading out. Also, some will require you to have a restaurant’s app or be signed up for emails.

May 1: Early Cinco de Mayo deals

These Cinco de Mayo offers are now available:

Bahama Breeze: This Cinco de Mayo deal lasts through May 31. Except for Mother’s Day at participating locations, get $5 classic margaritas and $10 Create Your Own Premium Tequila and Rum Flights.

El Fenix: Through Sunday, get eight-ounce margaritas for $1.

Hungry Howie’s: Through Sunday, get a one-topping large pizza for $5.55 at participating locations.

Moe’s Southwest Grill: Through Thursday, May 2, Moe Rewards Members get a free side of queso with every adult purchase. On Friday and Saturday, they get double rewards points and on Sunday, the first 50 people in line before they open get a free Cinco shirt. Learn more at www.moes.com/cinco.

Taco Cabana: The Texas-based chain has daily $5 specials leading up to Cinco de Mayo, including a Chicken Flauta Combo Wednesday, two Brisket Tacos Thursday, classic nachos Friday and a six-pack of $5 Flautas Saturday. Sunday there’s an all-day happy hour.

Taco John’s: Through Sunday, get five beef soft-shell tacos for $5. In some markets, the deal is five for $5.55.

Uno Pizzeria & Grill: Through Sunday, get $2 Sauza Margaritas and $2 Corona beer.

May 1: Sonny’s BBQ; Green Leafs deals

Sonny’s BBQ: The chain kicks off National BBQ Month with a deal Wednesday, May 1. For dine-in only, get all-you-can-eat chicken for $6.99.

Green Leafs: Get a coupon for a free Pick & Mix salad for joining the chain’s eClub Wednesday, May 1. Sign up at www.greenleafsbananas.com/freesalad.

May 2: Carvel 85 cents cups and cones

In honor of Carvel’s 85th birthday, get junior cups and cones for $0.85 in all full service shoppes nationwide Thursday, May 2. Learn more at www.carvel.com/cone-day.

Through May 4: Target car seat event

Through Saturday, Target stores will accept and recycle car seats, including infant seats, convertible seats, car seat bases, harness or booster car seats.

In exchange for the old car seat, get a coupon for 20% off “a new car seat, car seat base, travel system, stroller or select baby home gear, such as playards, high chairs, swings, rockers and bouncers.”

The seats can be traded in only at a Target store at Guest Services. The coupons can be used in-store and online through May 11. Learn more here.

May 4: Free Comic Book; Star Wars Day

Saturday is like the Super Bowl for fans of comic books and the Star Wars series. It’s the 18th annual Free Comic Book Day and Star Wars Day.

For Free Comic Book Day, more than 2,200 comic book specialty shops worldwide expect to give away 5.2 million free comic books. Go to www.freecomicbookday.com to find participating comic shops, preview the free comics and to learn more.

Cicis: Buy one adult buffet and large drink and get a second adult buffet with a coupon Saturday.

Mountain Mike’s: The pizza chain is celebrating with $3 off any large pizza using promo code 132781.

Potbelly Sandwich Shop: Give your best Wookiee roar when checking out Saturday and get a free cookie with purchase.

May 4-5: Free museum admission

The Bank of America “Museums on Us” program is held the first full weekend of each month in 2019. Bank of America, Merrill Lynch and U.S. Trust credit and debit cardholders get free general admission to select cultural attractions throughout the country by presenting their credit or debit card and a photo ID.

There are more than 225 Museums on Us partners in 123 cities across the U.S. The offer is for cardholders only. Guests are not eligible for free admission and the program excludes fundraising events, special exhibitions and ticketed shows.

May 5: Cinco de Mayo

The following are confirmed deals and check back soon for additions. Here’s how restaurants celebrated in 2018. 

7-Eleven: With 7NOW, 7-Eleven’s delivery service, select parts of the country, including New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco, Dallas, Austin, Seattle, Chicago, Charlotte and more can get free delivery on beer orders Sunday. Abuelo’s: Get a $5 Grande Mexican Draft Beer special and $6.95 Flag Margarita Sunday.

Bar Louie: From Friday through Sunday, locations are hosting Cabo de Mayo parties with two specialty tacos for $5 and $5 drink specials on two special cocktails. The specials are available during Cabo de Mayo celebrations.

Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.: Get $1 tacos and $4 Corona Extras all day Sunday.

California Pizza Kitchen: Get $5 Fresh Agave Lime Margaritas Sunday at select locations.

Casa Ole: Through May 7, all-you-can-eat fajitas in chicken, beef or mixed are $15 at participating locations. One order per person and this dine-in offer cannot be shared. Not valid with any other promotion.

Chili’s: Three beverages – the Tequila Trifecta, the Presidente Margarita and draft beer – are each $5 Sunday.

Chipotle: Get free DoorDash delivery on Chipotle orders $10 or more Sunday placed through the on-demand delivery service’s website or app, the Chipotle app and Chipotle.com. No promo code is needed but the maximum order size for free delivery is $200, excluding tax.

 

Chopt: For Cinco de Mayo weekend, get 20% off the Mexican Caesar Salad online at www.choptsalad.com with promo code SaladCinco. Not valid in stores.

Chuy’s: It’s a three-day party. For Fiesta Friday, get $1 floaters. Sippin’ Saturday has $1 floaters and $1 off Perfect Margaritas, and for Cinco de Mayo get the Saturday deals and $5 regular House Ritas, $8 Grande House Ritas and $5 queso or guacamole. 

Cumberland Farms: Get a mobile coupon for $1 nachos Saturday and Sunday, while supplies last. To get the deal, text the word CHOS to 64827.

Duffy’s Sports Grill: The Florida-based chain has Cinco de Mayo deals Friday through Sunday. Get $3 Classic Margaritas, five for $15 Corona buckets, $9 Taco Trios and $4 Patron Silver shots.

El Fenix: Through Sunday, get eight-ounce margaritas for $1.

El Pollo Loco: From Friday through Sunday, the chain has two Cinco de Mayo deals. Get $5 Street Corn Tostadas and $5 five-piece Fire-Grilled Chicken with coupons posted at www.elpolloloco.com/cincodemayo. Print or show the coupons, which are not available on online or app orders.

Teacher Appreciation deals, freebies

National Teacher Appreciation Day is Tuesday, May 7, but some national chains are celebrating for longer. Dates and participation vary. Here are the 2018 offers.

Bruegger’s Bagels: The bagel restaurant celebrates Teacher Appreciation Week May 6-10 and is giving all teachers a free medium drip or iced coffee with any purchase and valid ID.

Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen: From May 6 to 10, teachers dining in can get a free appetizer with the purchase of an adult entrée. No coupon is needed.

Chipotle: Teachers, faculty and other school staff with a valid school ID can take advantage of a buy-one-get-one free offer from 3 p.m. to close Tuesday, May 7. The deal is on burritos, bowls, salads and orders of tacos and for in-restaurant orders only and available for educators at all levels.

Cicis: Teachers and school staff get a free adult buffet Tuesday for National Teacher Appreciation Day with a valid school ID and a coupon.

Duffy’s Sports Grill: Teachers get a $10 MVP Bonus loaded directly onto their MVP accounts during Teachers Appreciation Week May 6-10 when they show their faculty ID badge. Sign up for the MVP program at www.duffysmvp.com/mvp.

Giordano’s: From May 6 to 9, Giordano’s is offering 20% off any order with the code 656-263-214. The offer is dine-in and online and for both nurses and teachers.

The Greene Turtle: Teachers get a free $14 meal Tuesday with a valid school ID. Dine-in only.

Grimaldi’s Pizzeria: Teachers get a 15% discount May 6-10 with their ID on dine-in and takeout orders. Not valid in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Also, through May 10, nominate a teacher to win a pizza party at www.grimaldispizzeria.com/teachers. Winning teachers will be announced May 31.

Hopdoddy Burger Bar: Teachers get a free small shake Tuesday, May 7 when they show their school ID.

Luna Grill: All teachers get 20% off any order with school ID May 6-11.

McAlister’s Deli: Teachers get a free McAlister’s Deli Sweet Tea during Teacher Appreciation Week, May 6-10 with a valid school ID.

Metro Diner: From Monday through Friday, May 10, teachers and school faculty members get 20% off their check.

MOD Pizza: On Tuesday, teachers get a buy-one-get-one free deal on MOD-size pizza or salads with their school IDs on in-store orders.

MOOYAH Burgers, Fries & Shakes: Teachers text TEACH to 97455 and get a coupon for a free burger with purchase of fries and a drink or shake to redeem on Wednesday, May 8. School ID must be presented at ordering for this dine-in offer.

Pluckers Wing Bar: Teachers get a free appetizer and half-price glasses of wine Friday, May 10.

Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers: From 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, teachers and faculty get one free Box Combo when they present current school IDs.

Roy Rogers Restaurants: Teachers with a valid teacher ID get a free milkshake or dessert with any purchase May 6-10.

Scooter’s Coffee: Teachers and nurses get half off any drink May 6 when they show proof.

Slim Chickens: With valid school IDs Tuesday, students and teachers get a 20% discount and a free cookie with dine-in and drive-thru orders.

Sonic Drive-In: This Teacher Appreciation Month deal is for teachers and “those who appreciate them as much as Sonic does,” the fast-food chain says. From May 7-31, get a free Route 44 drink or slush with purchase when ordering on the restaurant’s app with promo code TEACHERS. Download the app at www.sonicdrivein.com/app.

National Nurses Day/Week specials

National Nurses Day is officially Monday, May 6, but businesses are honoring nurses on various days. Many more deals are expected. Here’s what  businesses offered in 2018.

Giordano’s: From May 6 to 9, Giordano’s is offering 20% off any order with the code 656-263-214. The offer is dine-in and online and for both nurses and teachers.

MOD Pizza: On Sunday, May 12, nurses get a buy-one-get-one free deal on MOD-size pizza or salads with their nurses IDs on in-store orders.

Scooter’s Coffee: Teachers and nurses get half off any drink May 6 when they show proof.

Sonny’s BBQ: Any nurse with a valid ID can get a free Pork Big Deal May 6 at all locations.

May 12: Mother’s Day

We’ll be adding the deals and freebies for mom shortly. But here’s what was offered in 2018.

Ongoing offers

Applebee’s: May is Military Appreciation Month and participating Applebee’s restaurants are offering active, retired military servicemembers and their families to dine and receive 10% off their bill.

Chili’s: The $5 Margarita for May is the “Tequila Trifecta,” which is made with Cuervo Gold Tequila, 1800 Reposado Tequila, Sauza Blue Silver Tequila, Triple Sec and fresh sour. 

Chipotle: Through June 23, sign up for the chain’s new nationwide loyalty program Chipotle Rewards and make a $5 or more purchase to get free chips and guac. Sign up at www.chipotle.com/rewards or on the Chipotle app.

The Greene Turtle: Through June 2, get Endless Tacos in buffalo or grilled chicken for $9.99.

Olive Garden: Through May 27, the chain has four “Giant Italian Classics” including a Giant Chicken Parmigiana and the Giant Meatball, which weighs about 12 ounces. Giant Italian Classics are served with unlimited breadsticks, homemade soup or salad with prices starting at $12.99.

Taco Bell: Through May 11, get one free small Mountain Dew Baja Blast Zero Sugar with any online or app purchase.
