Kroger is recalling three varieties of frozen berries due to possible Hepatitis A contamination.
On Friday, the grocery chain said it’s recalling Private Selection Frozen Triple Berry Medley (48 oz), Private Selection Frozen Triple Berry Medley (16 oz) and Private Selection Frozen Blackberries (16 oz) manufactured by Townsend Farms.
Kroger was informed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that a sample of Private Selection frozen berries was tested by the FDA and found to be contaminated with Hepatitis A, according to a company announcement.
As of Friday, no customer illnesses had been reported, the FDA said.
The frozen berries have a two-year shelf life, according to the FDA, and the federal agency is “continuing to investigate to determine whether there are other implicated products.”
Stores have removed the potentially affected items from store shelves, the company said, and customers who may have purchased the recalled products are being contacted.
Anyone who purchased the recalled products should not consume them and should return them to a store for a refund or replacement.
Hepatitis A is a contagious liver disease that results from exposure to the Hepatitis A virus, including from food, the FDA said. It can range from a mild illness lasting a few weeks to a serious illness lasting several months. Illness typically occurs within 15 to 50 days of exposure and includes fatigue, abdominal pain, jaundice, abnormal liver tests, dark urine and pale stool.
Anyone who has eaten the recalled berries are urged to consult with their health care provider to determine whether vaccination is appropriate, and those with symptoms should get treatment immediately.
