Select bags recalled for E. coli risk

Select bags of King Arthur Flour have been recalled for possible E. coli contamination.

According to the safety alert posted on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website, 14,218 cases of 5 lb. Unbleached All-Purpose Flour are a part of the voluntary recall “due to the potential presence of Escherichia coli bacteria (E. coli).”

The recalled Unbleached All-Purpose Flour was distributed through retailers and distributors nationwide.

“King Arthur has been informed by ADM Milling Co. that certain wheat used to make these lots of King Arthur flour has been linked to an ongoing outbreak of E. coli infections,” the alert states. “No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with King Arthur flour.”

Buffalo, New York-based ADM Milling Co. was also involved with the recent Aldi flour recall.

Last month, the discount grocer and ADM recalled five-pound bags of Baker’s Corner All Purpose Flour sold at select Aldi stores in 11 states “due to a potential presence of E. coli.”

On May 24, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said health officials were investigating a multistate outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O26 infections linked to flour packaged by ADM Milling Co. The CDC said in May that the E. coli outbreak had sickened 17 people in eight states.

E. coli infections typically occur three to four days after consuming the germ, the CDC says. Severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody) and vomiting can result after five to seven days. In severe cases, patients may get hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure.

Products sold through King Arthur Flour website, Baker’s Catalogue, or the Baker’s Store in Norwich, Vermont are not included in this voluntary recall.

“Customers have trusted King Arthur Flour products in their kitchens for over 225 years and that’s why we have issued this voluntary recall,” King Arthur Flour said in a statement. “We remain committed to providing our customers safe and superior products.”

Customers can return the flour to local stores for a credit or refund. For questions, contact the King Arthur Flour Consumer Hotline at 866-797-9178.
