T-Mobile, Google, Fedex, Intuit among best at encouraging diversity


Incidents of workplace bias aren’t hard to come by. 

Every year, thousands of workers file complaints with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission — the agency created to eradicate discrimination on the job and investigate workers’ grievances. And high-profile cases abound of employees filing lawsuits against companies citing unfair and unequal treatment. 

As minorities, allies and bottom-line focused execs work to diversify organizations that have failed to welcome and support all workers, it’s important to spotlight the companies that seem to be getting it right. 

That’s according to the compensation, culture and career monitoring website Comparably, which released a list of the top-ranked CEOs for diversity on Tuesday based on ratings from a pool of ethnically diverse employees.

“I think anytime you have a leadership team that’s diverse itself, whether ethnicity or sexual orientation, that trickles down,” said Comparably’s CEO Jason Nazar, who added that the many of the CEOs on the list “make a very public commitment to diversity and inclusion, making sure that those are fairly represented across the company.”

Who came out on top? 

Sasan Goodarzi of the financial software company Intuit, Daniel Dines of the automation vendor UiPath, and Carlos Rodriguez of the online payroll company ADP were ranked highest, representing companies with at least 500 employees.

T-Mobile’s CEO John Legere and Google’s Sundar Pichai rounded out the top 5.

For companies with fewer than 500 employees, Giuseppi Incitti, CEO of the asset management startup Sitetracker topped the list, followed by the heads of Phenom People and SmartProcure/GovSpend.

Phenom People provides a marketing platform for companies looking to recruit and SmartProcure/GovSpend are technology companies that aggregate and provide data from government agencies. 

The winners have “have very clear visions as leaders. They are empathetic and take in the feedback of their teams. They set very clear goals, and they are hitting and exceeding those goals,” Nazar said.

“People want to be part of the teams that are enjoying that success.”

Methodology

Comparably Awards are derived from sentiment ratings provided by employees who anonymously rated their CEOs on Comparably.com between June 7th, 2018 and June 7th, 2019. There were no fees or costs associated with participating, nor was nomination required. The answer to each question was given a numerical score and then compared to companies of similar size across the U.S. Additional weight was given to scores at companies with more participation from their employee base.
