I hate to admit that I only recently tried Sonic’s iconic Cherry Limeade for the first time this past year. My sister took me to one of the drive-in fast food spots in Nashville while we were visiting my nephew, and I’m still not over the fact that I’ve been missing out on this tasty creation for my entire life! The best part wasn’t the fresh fruit or the tart, tangy flavor though—rather it was the crunchy, chewy nugget ice that I found so addictive. I’ve honestly been craving those little nugs ever since, but the closest Sonic to my house is over an hour away, sadly. The answer to my prayers? The Opal Nugget Ice Maker.
I don’t have to convince my fellow Sonic lovers about why this Opal machine is so awesome. Nugget ice beverages from the comfort of your home? Personally, I’m sold. The only downside is the price, as the Opal usually retails for $499. Yikes. No ice, even in delightful nugget form, is worth that much to most of us. Luckily, the Opal ice maker is on sale for $420 on Amazon right now, which is still a tad pricey, but worth it in my opinion, and here’s why.
When we tested this nugget ice machine, we loved how easy the setup was and how it churned out 14 ounces of petite, perfectly formed ice within an hour. You can even use the Opal bluetooth-enabled app to get status updates on how your nugs are coming along.
If you’re confused about what actually differentiates nugget ice from its crushed and cubed counterparts, let me explain. First off, if you like to munch on ice like me, the nuggets are way better for your teeth because they’re made from compressed ice flakes which make them softer and easier to chew. The unique composition also means that nugget ice melts much slower and absorbs liquid into its air pockets, not only making it even yummier for ice eaters, but also improving the taste of your drink instead of watering it down.
Though the Opal is a bit of an investment, it’s honestly an incredible purchase if you enjoy making yummy cocktails and other fruity beverages, especially in the summer. You probably won’t ever want to use your refrigerator ice again, just sayin’.
