A shooting at Mexico’s Teotihuacan archaeological site left a Canadian woman dead and several other people injured on Monday, Mexican authorities said. The incident occurred at the complex outside Mexico City, and the gunman later died by suicide at the site.
Video shared on social media and shown by local outlets captured tourists scrambling for cover as shots rang out. The footage showed a man firing intermittently from about halfway up the Pyramid of the Moon while visitors sheltered nearby.
President Claudia Sheinbaum said federal and state security forces were deployed to Teotihuacan and described the episode as deeply painful. Her administration said it was in contact with Canadian authorities and expressed solidarity with those affected and their families.
Canada’s foreign affairs minister, Anita Anand, called the attack a horrific act of gun violence and said her thoughts were with the victims’ loved ones.
Local officials reported four people hospitalized with gunshot wounds and two others treated for injuries from falls during the panic. Those hurt included tourists from Colombia, Russia and Canada. Authorities recovered a firearm, a knife and ammunition at the scene.
Teotihuacan, once one of Mesoamerica’s most important cultural centers, is among Mexico’s top tourist destinations and attracted about 1.8 million visitors last year. With Mexico set to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside the United States and Canada, security at major cultural and tourist sites has been under increased scrutiny.
