At least 14 people died and 84 were treated in hospital after a train collision outside Jakarta late Monday, Indonesia’s state railway company KAI said. The long-distance Argo Bromo Anggrek slammed into the rear carriage of a stopped commuter train at Bekasi Timur Station. The damaged rear carriage had been designated for women only, and KAI said all fatalities were passengers on the commuter service. The 240 passengers aboard the long-distance train were evacuated without serious injury.
Jakarta’s search and rescue agency reported heavy damage to multiple carriages and said some passengers were trapped by wreckage. Teams worked through the night to free those pinned inside; most trapped people had been released by Tuesday morning. Mohammad Syafii, head of the rescue agency, said extrication required personnel with specialist skills because some victims were still alive but remained trapped in mangled train material.
Rescuers had separated the trains at the scene, a Reuters witness said, and Jakarta police opened an investigation into the cause of the crash. Train accidents are not uncommon on Indonesia’s aging rail network; in January 2024 a separate collision in West Java killed at least four people.
