An Air Canada Express regional jet struck a ground vehicle after landing at New York’s LaGuardia Airport on Sunday evening, flight tracker Flightradar24 reported. The New York Police Department confirmed the collision, which prompted the airport to close.
A New York Port Authority official said both pilots were killed in the crash. The official added the aircraft struck a fire truck operated by police officers. Dozens of passengers and crew were injured; 41 people were taken to a local hospital, most have since been released, and nine remain hospitalized.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said LaGuardia was expected to remain closed until 2 p.m. Eastern Time on Monday. The airport’s website showed arriving flights diverting to other airports and some returning to their origin. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board has deployed technical experts to investigate the incident.
Flightradar24 said the CRJ-900, operating from Montreal, hit the vehicle at about 39 kilometers (24 miles) per hour. The CRJ-900, operated by Jazz on behalf of Air Canada, can seat up to 76 passengers. Air Canada said 72 passengers and four crew were on board.
Social media video from the scene appears to show heavy damage to the airplane’s nose and the front of the jet tilted upward. New York City’s emergency notification system warned of flight cancellations, road closures, traffic delays and a large emergency response around the airport.
LaGuardia is one of the region’s busiest airports, serving more than 30 million passengers in 2025, New York authorities say. The investigation by federal and local agencies is ongoing.
