House Democrats on the Natural Resources Committee released a 55‑page oversight report accusing Freedom 250 — a White House‑backed public‑private partnership — of helping President Trump turn the nation’s 250th anniversary into a vehicle for partisan promotion, self‑enrichment and, possibly, criminal misconduct.
Titled “From Vanity to Insanity: How the White House Cheated the American People out of their 250th Birthday,” the report, compiled over months by Rep. Jared Huffman and his staff, draws on whistleblower interviews, sworn testimony, internal documents and written responses. It alleges Freedom 250 supplanted the bipartisan America250 commission, diverted public and private money, sold access to the president and injected a sectarian, partisan agenda into national celebrations.
Freedom 250 has organized several high‑profile events tied to the semiquincentennial, including a UFC event outside the White House, a state fair on the National Mall, the July Fourth fireworks show that opened with a Trump rally, and youth athletic competitions. Democrats say some events presented a sanitized history and an overtly Christian tone. The report also points to longer‑term projects tied to Trump, such as plans for a 250‑foot triumphal arch.
The group was incorporated as an LLC in October 2025 under the National Park Foundation, the nonprofit affiliate of the National Park Service. Critics assert the foundation has taken on a more political character after new board members aligned with Trump joined its leadership; the Interior secretary, Doug Burgum, testified he did not know who made the final decision on Freedom 250 and has said the group is “run out of the White House.” Freedom 250 says it does not speak for the White House.
Key allegations in the report include:
– Donors who intended to support the congressionally chartered, nonpartisan America250 were allegedly misled and given Freedom 250 banking information, which Democrats say could amount to fraud. Freedom 250 denies the claim and says sponsors were informed of the recipient organization.
– Federal and private funds were routed to projects, contracts and vendors with ties to the Trump administration and allies. The report and other watchdog analyses say more than $100 million of public money has flowed to entities connected to the administration, including contracts to companies with controversial past work on political rallies.
– Freedom 250 marketed itself as complementary to America250 while effectively supplanting it, creating confusion that critics say was exploited to solicit sponsors and sell opportunities such as photo‑ops with the president.
– There are concerns about donor transparency and potential foreign influence. Freedom 250 denies accepting foreign funding; critics point to comments by Freedom 250’s CEO Keith Krach at the World Economic Forum as evidence of solicitation efforts abroad.
Freedom 250 spokesperson Danielle Alvarez called the report “categorically false” and a “partisan smear.” The report has not been adopted as the committee’s official finding, and Republicans on the panel have so far declined to pursue oversight. America250 leadership has said it remains focused on its bipartisan programming and supports other groups planning commemorative events.
Huffman said his team encountered resistance seeking documents and expects the investigation to continue beyond July Fourth. If Democrats regain the House, he said subpoenas or criminal referrals are possible. Critics and ethics advocates say the situation underscores a broader problem of transparency when public celebrations and large federal dollars are managed outside traditional public commissions.
The central dispute remains whether Freedom 250 acted as a legitimate partner to the bipartisan anniversary commission or whether it was used to centralize control, funnel money to allies and advance partisan aims. The report calls for fuller disclosure and legal scrutiny to ensure public funds and a national commemoration were not misused for private or political gain.
