An individual was shot by law enforcement Monday near the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., the U.S. Secret Service said.
The agency said on social media that Secret Service personnel were on the scene of “an officer-involved shooting” at 15th Street and Independence Avenue. The Secret Service said one person was shot by law enforcement.
Deputy Director Matt Quinn said the person opened fire after being confronted by officers, and officers returned fire.
Authorities said a bystander was struck by gunfire from the suspect. A local fire department spokesman told the Associated Press that emergency responders transported an adult male to a hospital and were treating what appeared to be a teenage male for minor injuries. The condition of the person shot by law enforcement was not immediately released.
The nearby White House was briefly placed in lockdown. President Donald Trump was reportedly in the White House for a small business meeting at the time. Vice President JD Vance had passed through the area in a motorcade shortly before the shooting; officials said there was no indication he was targeted.
The incident occurred just over a week after a separate attack in which a gunman attempted to force his way into the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner and wounded a Secret Service officer.
