Seven people suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries after a car struck pedestrians in central Derby on Friday evening, British police said. The collision occurred on Friar Gate at about 9:30 p.m. local time when a black Suzuki Swift hit several people.
Ambulance crews treated the seven at the scene before they were taken to Royal Derby Hospital and the Queen’s Medical Centre in nearby Nottingham. Derbyshire Police established a cordon on Friar Gate while officers examined the scene.
A man in his 30s, originally from India, was located shortly after the incident and arrested. He remains in police custody and is being held on suspicion of attempted murder, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, and other dangerous driving offences, as inquiries continue.
Police said investigators are considering all possible motives and that the probe is ongoing.
Catherine Atkinson, the Member of Parliament for Derby North, said she was “deeply shocked,” expressed sympathy for those injured and thanked emergency services for their response.
