Former Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell was admitted to a hospital on Sunday, his office confirmed.
The 84-year-old Kentucky senator’s condition has not been disclosed. McConnell’s spokesman, David Popp, said in an email that McConnell “is receiving excellent care” but did not give a reason for the hospitalization.
McConnell has been seen using a wheelchair in the U.S. Capitol in recent months and often moves with assistance from staff. In 2023 he froze and appeared unable to speak for nearly 30 seconds during a weekly press conference while serving as leader. He has also experienced a series of falls in recent years, including one that resulted in a concussion and an absence from the Senate of almost six weeks.
McConnell’s mobility has long been affected by a childhood bout of polio, which left him with a partially paralyzed leg. He announced in 2024 that he would step down from Republican leadership and in 2025 said he would not seek another six-year Senate term. After more than four decades in the Senate, his tenure is scheduled to end at the close of this year.
No further information about his condition or expected hospital stay was released.
