A suspect opened fire on law enforcement officers near the White House on Saturday evening, prompting a major security response. The U.S. Secret Service said its officers returned fire; the suspect was transported to a nearby hospital and later died. No officers were reported injured.
A bystander was also shot, the Secret Service said. Authorities have not released information on that person’s condition.
A law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the suspect as emotionally disturbed and said the individual had previously been issued a stay-away order.
President Donald Trump was at the White House when the shooting occurred. It is not known whether he was the intended target. Trump posted earlier on his Truth Social platform that he was in the Oval Office working on finalizing a deal with Iran. The Secret Service said no protectees or White House operations were impacted.
Witnesses and reporters described a heavy presence of Secret Service, police and National Guard personnel around 17th and H Street NW, just outside the White House. Police set up a security perimeter, urged people to avoid the area and told journalists inside the complex to shelter during a temporary lockdown.
The location of the shooting is near the site where two West Virginia National Guard soldiers were shot in November 2025; one of those soldiers died and the other was critically injured.
Saturday’s incident follows a recent string of threats against the president. Less than a month earlier, authorities said a gunman attempted to target President Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on April 25; a 31-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder in that case. Trump also survived separate alleged plots in 2024, including a bullet grazing his ear at a campaign rally in July and an accused plot linked to his Florida golf course in September.
The Secret Service continues to investigate the shooting near the White House, and local law enforcement maintained a heightened security posture in the area.
