A United Airlines Boeing 777-200ER returned safely to Dulles International Airport in Virginia Saturday after one of its engines failed shortly after takeoff, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy posted on X that the jet, which was bound for Tokyo, experienced a loss of engine power. A section of the engine cowling separated and ignited, producing a small brushfire on the ground.
The aircraft was carrying 275 passengers and 15 crew members; Duffy said there were no reported injuries. Airport and airline personnel responded to the scene, and the FAA has opened an investigation into the incident to determine the cause and any contributing factors.
