Police in Athens were searching for a gunman on Tuesday after shots were fired at a social security office and a courthouse, injuring several people. Public broadcaster ERT reported the suspect is an 89-year-old man and said police operations were under way to locate him.
Authorities said the attacker used a shotgun at a branch of EFKA, Greece’s social security agency, wounding an employee in the leg. He then took a taxi to a court building, where police and court officials said he fired several shots inside, lightly wounding four female court clerks.
The motive for the attacks remained unclear. ERT reported the man fled the scene but left letters and documents at the courthouse.
Gun violence is relatively rare in Greece, where firearm ownership is permitted but tightly regulated. The incident remains under investigation and this developing story will be updated as more information becomes available.
