Iranian and US delegations are meeting in Oman to discuss Tehran’s nuclear program and other issues as tensions between the two countries remain high.
The US team is led by special envoy Steve Witkoff and includes Jared Kushner, who is traveling with the delegation. Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, arrived in Oman with a diplomatic team, state news agency IRNA reported.
Araghchi wrote on X that Iran approaches diplomacy “with open eyes and a steady memory of the past year,” saying commitments must be honored. He added that “equal standing, mutual respect and mutual interest are not rhetoric — they are a must and the pillars of a durable agreement.”
Ahead of the talks, Araghchi met Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi to discuss regional and international issues. Oman previously acted as mediator during US–Iran negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program in 2025; that process was interrupted by a 12-day war with Israel.
The discussions occur against a backdrop of a US naval buildup near Iran and public warnings from President Donald Trump about possible military action. Tensions have also been fuelled by nationwide protests in Iran since late December over an economic crisis; Trump publicly expressed support for the demonstrators and said “help is on its way.”
Oman’s role as host highlights its continued position as an intermediary as Washington and Tehran pursue dialogue while balancing domestic political pressures and regional security concerns.
