A man was arrested Friday after a Molotov cocktail was thrown at OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s home in San Francisco, the company said. OpenAI also reported that threats were made against its San Francisco headquarters. No one was injured in the incident.
According to local reports, firefighters were called just before 4 a.m. and found that security guards had already extinguished a fire at the exterior gate of Altman’s residence. The suspect fled the scene before firefighters arrived.
About an hour later, police responded to a separate report of a man threatening to burn down the building that houses OpenAI’s headquarters. Authorities identified and arrested the same individual in connection with both incidents, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Police said the person taken into custody is 20 years old; his name has not been released and no formal charges had been filed as of the report. Altman has not publicly commented on the arrest.
OpenAI spokesperson Jamie Radice said the company is cooperating with law enforcement and thanked the San Francisco Police Department and city officials for their quick response and support in keeping employees safe. Radice confirmed the individual is in custody.
