Argentine President Javier Milei used a 90-minute address to parliament to laud his personal relationship with US President Donald Trump and to call for formalizing a closer strategic partnership with Washington. Milei said the alliance with the United States should become “state policy,” noting the financial assistance Argentina received last year and describing Trump as a key ally.
He also voiced support for the United States and Israel in their recent opening of hostilities with Iran, which began on Saturday, and said Argentina had moved to a heightened state of alert.
In the speech Milei framed Argentina as a vital supplier of raw materials and energy, and as a country with strategic geography. He told lawmakers the South Atlantic would be a central arena in coming decades and argued Argentina must be an active regional player. He called for a “century of the Americas,” invoking the slogan “Make Americas Great Again,” and stressed that Argentina’s deposits of critical minerals and its gas, oil, nuclear and renewable energy resources make it a potential linchpin for large industrial supply chains. He also noted the country’s access to two oceans and its presence in Antarctica.
Riding momentum from recent legislative victories, Milei hailed economic stabilization efforts and outlined plans to expand his reform agenda. He unveiled a package of about 90 reforms intended to reshape Argentina over the next 50 years, touching the economy, taxation, the criminal code, the electoral system, education, the judiciary and defense.
The address drew warm applause from supporters in the chamber while prompting protests and objections from opposition parties outside and within parliament.
