A humpback whale nicknamed Timmy, first reported stuck in Wismar Bay on Germany’s Baltic Sea coast on March 31, was observed moving again on Monday morning after becoming stranded once more over the weekend. Rescuers and marine specialists say rising tides and strengthening winds helped lift Timmy enough for him to swim back into deeper water under his own power, a development they called encouraging.
The whale’s ordeal captured national attention, with several broadcasters streaming the situation around the clock. Rescue boats have continued to shepherd Timmy away from the shoreline, and crews plan to fit him with a tracking device once they finish assisting, to follow his progress as he returns to the wild.
The most recent effort to free and protect Timmy drew backing from independent supporters, including Walter Gunz, co-founder of electronics retailer MediaMarkt. That support came after earlier government attempts did not succeed in getting the whale safely back out to sea, and at times hopes for his survival had waned.
Authorities and marine experts said they would keep monitoring Timmy closely as he moves away from the coast, ready to respond if further assistance is needed.
