Shots were fired on Thursday in the Klausenbachstrasse area of Linz, Austria, and police say three people were killed. A police spokesman told Reuters that the weapon used was recovered by law enforcement.
National broadcaster ORF reported a large police presence in the north of the city as officers secured the scene.
Ulrike Handlbauer, a spokeswoman for Upper Austria state police, told ORF that the deceased were one man and two women. She said police could not yet provide more details about motive or the identities of the victims.
The tabloid Kronen Zeitung reported that an elderly man shot two women and then shot himself outside a hospitality business. Police told the paper the wider danger to the public had passed.
The incident occurred in front of a hospitality venue in northern Linz. Authorities kept part of the area clear while they investigated.
Linz sits on the River Danube in Upper Austria, roughly halfway between Salzburg and Vienna, and has a population of more than 200,000.
Gun homicides are relatively rare in Austria, at about 0.2 gun-related deaths per 100,000 people per year — more than 25 times lower than in the United States, though not among the lowest rates in Europe.
