Amazon Backs Small Nuclear Reactors at Former Indiana Coal Site

Amazon has taken a significant step towards sustainable energy by committing to the development of a new nuclear plant in Indiana, which will employ 12 small modular reactors. This initiative not only targets a total capacity of 960 megawatts but also positions Amazon as the plant’s inaugural customer.

Collaboration with Industry Leaders

The utility firm American Electric Power (AEP) will manage the operations at this innovative facility, while X-energy, known for its cutting-edge small modular reactor technology, will provide the reactors designed to meet modern energy demands. This marks the second major agreement between X-energy and Amazon, with this latest venture being three times larger than their previous collaboration announced two years ago.

Transitioning from Coal to Nuclear

This new nuclear plant is set to be constructed on the grounds of a decommissioned coal power station located just south of Terre Haute. Amazon’s substantial investment in X-energy, which notably included a leading role in a $700 million Series C-1 funding round in October 2024, underlines its commitment to enhancing nuclear energy capacity in the U.S. The goal shared between the two companies is to develop 5 gigawatts of nuclear energy capacity by 2039.

Connecting to the Grid

In a distinctive move for a new power facility, these reactors will connect directly to the public electric grid. While the power generated will supply Amazon’s data centers, it will also ensure a broader contribution to the energy market.

Paths to Progress and Challenges Ahead

However, the timeline for this ambitious project hinges on X-energy successfully completing the construction of its first power plant located at a Dow Chemical site near Houston, Texas. The Seadrift facility has recently been embroiled in legal disputes, as the state of Texas has accused it of continuous violations concerning environmental regulations.

As X-energy moves forward, the company is nearing the final phases of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's review process for securing the construction permit necessary for the Seadrift site, which will host four Xe-100 reactors supplying essential power and heat to the facility.

Revitalizing the Nuclear Sector

The rise of small modular reactors (SMRs), like those X-energy is set to deploy, represents a hopeful trend aimed at revitalizing the nuclear power industry. Past nuclear projects in the U.S. have faced significant challenges, including drastic budget overruns and extended timelines. By opting for smaller reactor models, X-energy and other firms believe that mass production will lead to lower costs and adherence to planned schedules.

However, it remains to be seen how effectively this strategy will materialize, as experts warn that the advantages of mass manufacturing may not be realized for another decade.

Market Response and Future Outlook

X-energy made its debut on the Nasdaq earlier this year with an initial public offering priced at $23 per share. Following a positive start with a 27% price surge on the first day, shares have since seen a significant decline, dropping by almost two-thirds. However, news regarding Amazon's backing of their latest project has sparked renewed investor interest, pushing X-energy’s stock up approximately 10% in premarket trading, despite a slight drop by publication time.
