Editorial Policy
How we decide what to publish, and what happens when we get it wrong.
Being useful depends on being trusted, so it is worth writing down how the work is actually done.
How a story gets published
Someone proposes it, someone else checks it, and the figures and quotes in it are traced back to where they came from before it goes out.
Sourcing
We say where information comes from. Anonymous sourcing is used only where naming someone would put them at risk, and the reason is explained in the article.
Corrections
A mistake is fixed on the page and noted underneath it, with the date. Quietly editing an error away is worse than the error.
Independence
Anything paid for is labelled as such at the top, and no advertiser sees an article before it is published.
