April 28, 2026 - Google on Tuesday started building what it says will be its largest artificial intelligence hub outside the United States in Visakhapatnam (Vizag), a port city on India’s southeast coast. The ground-breaking follows an October 2025 announcement that Alphabet’s subsidiary will invest $15 billion over five years to create a full-stack AI ecosystem in the region. Bikash Koley, Google’s vice president for global infrastructure, said the campus will feature a gigawatt-scale data center intended to power services such as Gemini and Google Search, calling the initiative a $15 billion blueprint to deliver a full-stack AI ecosystem and a pivotal development for India, Vizag, and Google. Andhra Pradesh information technology minister Nara Lokesh said the project aligns with the state’s push to develop India’s leading AI and deep-tech hub. Google also said Vizag is being positioned as a landing point for submarine internet cables connecting India and Singapore, strengthening regional connectivity and the infrastructure needed for large-scale AI operations.
