Mykki Blanco Returns With Cafe Paradiso After Four Years and a Master's
The artist's first album since 2022 arrives after a period spent completing a postgraduate degree in Switzerland.

The gap is the interesting part
Four years is a long absence in a music economy built on continuous presence. The prevailing model rewards frequent releases, constant social output and algorithmic visibility that decays quickly without new material.
Stepping away from that to complete a postgraduate degree is a deliberate rejection of it — and a reminder that the incentive structure of streaming is a business arrangement rather than a natural law of how artists work.
Against the release treadmill
The pressure toward volume has measurable effects on what gets made. Artists describe releasing material before it is finished, structuring songs around platform metrics, and treating albums as collections of individually optimised tracks rather than as works with shape.
Whether a four-year gap produces better work is not something anyone can assert in advance. But it produces different work, made under different conditions — and the current system generates very little of that.
Blanco's position
Blanco has occupied an unusual place across a career spanning music, poetry and performance, working consistently outside conventional genre categories. Artists in that position tend to have audiences who follow the person rather than the format, which makes a four-year absence survivable in a way it would not be for an act dependent on chart momentum.
A crowded autumn for returns
The season has produced several:
- Beyoncé marking the twentieth anniversary of her second solo album with remastered material and new songs.
- Usher's concert film Rendezvous in Paris, in theatres 12-15 September.
- Don't Look Back In Anger, documenting the Oasis reunion tour.
The distinction is worth drawing. Two of those are anniversary and catalogue projects; Cafe Paradiso is new work. In an autumn heavily weighted toward revisiting, that is not a small thing.
