Ford Fathom: Affordable Home-Powering EV Charging Solutions

Ford's new Fathom pickup will feature cost-effective EV chargers capable of supplying power to homes, making it a practical energy solution.

Ford Unveils Innovative EV Chargers

Ford has introduced two new electric vehicle (EV) chargers designed specifically for its upcoming Fathom pickup truck. These chargers allow the Fathom to function as a power source for homes or the electrical grid, making it a versatile addition to any household.

Pricing and Capabilities

The starting price of the Fathom is set at an attractive $28,350, making it potentially the most affordable American EV with these features. According to Ford, the vehicle can deliver over 10 kW of power, akin to a small standby generator. While it may not power all devices in a typical American home simultaneously, it can keep essential items like a refrigerator and air conditioning running for approximately half a day during an outage.

Cost-Effective Charger Options

Ford’s latest chargers bring significant cost advantages. The Home Power Station is priced around $650, about 50% less than the company's previous bidirectional charger. This device helps homeowners save on utility bills by charging the Fathom during off-peak times and supplying electricity during peak usage hours.

Additionally, Ford offers a bundled package called Home Backup Power, which includes the Home Power Station and the Home Backup Panel. This setup allows the Fathom to power parts of a home when the grid is down, priced at approximately $2,100—representing a 60% saving compared to earlier versions.

Installation and Load Considerations

It's important to note that the prices for these devices do not encompass installation costs, which can soar up to $10,000 depending on necessary electrical upgrades in each home. Ford has yet to announce partnerships with installation companies but promises further details will be disclosed soon.

The amount of power the Fathom can supply is contingent upon household energy needs and installation specifics. For instance, devices like air conditioners and refrigerators demand a substantial energy surge at startup before settling into a lower operational load. Soft-start devices can ease these surges, although they may add to the overall installation expense.

Participating in Virtual Power Plants

Both chargers enable Fathom owners to connect to virtual power plants (VPPs), which utilize sophisticated software to manage a network of distributed energy storage, including EVs. As the electric grid faces increasing demand from technologies like AI data centers, VPPs could prove crucial in alleviating infrastructural strain.

Fathom owners who keep their vehicles plugged in may also have opportunities to sell surplus electricity back to the grid, often at favorable rates. While exact potential earnings for Fathom owners have not been specified, some have reported accruing more than $1,000 annually, dependent on grid demand and their level of active participation.

Looking Ahead

The launch of the Fathom and its associated charging options positions Ford at the forefront of energy storage innovation. With the increasing demand for sustainable energy solutions, the automaker is likely to continue exploring this emerging market as a key area for future development.
