Ithaca Energy Prepares for Leadership Transition as CEO Plans Retirement

Ithaca Energy's CEO Luciano Vasques will retire by March 31, 2027, prompting a search for his successor in a time of growth.

Ithaca Energy, a prominent oil and gas producer in the UK North Sea, is gearing up for a significant leadership change as its chief executive, Luciano Vasques, has announced his intention to retire by March 31, 2027. The company has begun the process of finding a new leader to ensure a smooth transition.

Search for a Successor

The board at Ithaca Energy is actively engaged in identifying a suitable successor, and a formal announcement regarding the new CEO will be shared in the near future. This planned transition reflects the company’s commitment to maintaining stability during this period of change.

Vasques' Impact on Ithaca Energy

Luciano Vasques took charge of Ithaca Energy in October 2024, following the successful merger with Eni's UK upstream oil and gas division. Under his leadership, the company has experienced remarkable growth, highlighted by its recent inclusion in the FTSE 100 index.

In a statement regarding his retirement, Vasques expressed confidence in the company’s current state, stating, “I believe the Company is in excellent shape and that now is the right time for me to retire and hand over the reins.” His decision comes after a dynamic period that has positioned Ithaca Energy for continued success.

Recent Acquisitions and Growth

Vasques' retirement is closely timed with Ithaca Energy's recent announcement of an $860 million acquisition of offshore oil assets in eastern Canada from Suncor Energy. This deal includes additional payments of up to $250 million contingent on oil prices. Set to finalize in the first half of 2027, this represents Ithaca’s inaugural foray into international acquisitions.

Vasques joined Ithaca Energy after a successful tenure as managing director of Eni UK, where he played a crucial role in acquiring and integrating Neptune Energy's UK operations. His extensive background includes overseeing significant projects in Kazakhstan, particularly at the country's renowned Kashagan and Karachaganak oil fields.

A Seasoned Leader

With over 30 years of rich experience in technical, operational, and executive positions, Vasques has been a notable figure in the energy sector. He also sits on the board of Offshore Energies UK, representing the interests of the UK’s offshore drilling industry.

As Ithaca Energy embarks on this leadership transition, the board and employees are poised to embrace the new opportunities and challenges ahead while continuing to build on the strong foundation laid during Vasques' tenure.
