New Command Links Space Force Guardians with Elite Special Ops

The US Space Force has launched a new command to integrate space capabilities with special operations forces.

Introduction of SPACEFOR-SOC

The United States Space Force has taken a significant step forward with the establishment of a new command aimed at bolstering special operations forces. Officially activated on October 7, 2023, the US Space Forces Special Operations Command, commonly referred to as SPACEFOR-SOC, represents the first addition to the US Special Operations Command's service components since the Marines formed their Marine Special Operations Command in 2006.

Headquartered for Global Reach

Situated at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida, SPACEFOR-SOC is designed to train and equip Space Force Guardians for various regional special operations commands worldwide. This new command joins the ranks of established units from other military services, including the Navy SEALs, Army Rangers and Green Berets, Marine Raiders, and Air Force pararescue teams.

Importance of Space in Modern Warfare

Admiral Frank Bradley, the commander of SOCOM, emphasized the command's role, stating, "For the SOF enterprise, this activation provides an enduring and accountable way to integrate space power into special operations." The introduction of SPACEFOR-SOC ensures that the Space Force maintains a continual presence alongside other special operations units.

Deployment and Capabilities

Utilizing a concept known as Space Special Warfare, SPACEFOR-SOC plans to deploy small teams consisting of specialists in space, cyber operations, and intelligence. These teams will deliver vital, low-signature space capabilities to special operations units operating in environments where communication is often compromised.

General Douglas Schiess, the chief of space operations for the Space Force, noted that the Guardians of SPACEFOR-SOC are redefining how special operations leaders view global challenges through the lens of space capabilities. This innovative approach brings essential expertise directly to combatant command headquarters.

Shifting Perspectives on Warfare

This activation coincides with a broader military acknowledgment that space has become a contested battlefield, akin to land, sea, air, and cyberspace. The evolving dynamics of warfare necessitate a proactive stance regarding space—a vital component for communication, navigation, missile warning, and intelligence.

Specifically, GPS functionality is a pressing issue for Space Guardians, as disruptions to satellite systems can severely disrupt the operations of various technologies and weapon systems. The Space Force, established in 2019, is the youngest branch of the military, focusing on both space operations and electronic warfare.

Learning from Recent Conflicts

Recent military engagements have illuminated both vulnerabilities and strategic advantages related to space and cyber domains. During early US operations against Iran, military officials reported that space and cyber forces were instrumental in the initial stages by jamming signals, hacking networks, and disrupting satellite functionalities, effectively blinding the Iranian forces.

Furthermore, Space Command and US Cyber Command have played critical roles in military operations against nations like Venezuela and in addressing Iran's nuclear capabilities. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine highlights the strategic importance of electromagnetic spectrum operations, with both sides vying for control and minimizing each other's access to satellites and communication networks.

Future Perspectives

The establishment of SPACEFOR-SOC signifies a comprehensive effort to incorporate these elements into special operations forces, thereby enhancing capabilities and expertise. The military increasingly recognizes that successful operations across all domains—land, sea, air—now rely heavily on adept management of the electromagnetic spectrum, space, and cyber operations.
