Polymarket Suspends Trading Amid Security Breach

Polymarket halted trading for nearly an hour due to a security issue involving third-party software, with assurances of reimbursement for affected users.

Polymarket, a leading platform for prediction markets, encountered a significant disruption on Thursday when it temporarily halted trading on its international site for nearly an hour. This shutdown was triggered by the compromise of a third-party software provider, which raised concerns over the security of user accounts.

User Wallets Reportedly Affected

During the outage, there were unverified claims from users on the platform's Discord channel indicating that their digital wallets had been depleted. Although Polymarket has not confirmed specific losses, the company assured its users that they would be fully compensated for any financial impact incurred.

“We’ll make this right and are fully reimbursing all affected traders,” Polymarket stated in a post on X.

Investigation and Response

The platform indicated that the security breach appeared to have originated from the United Kingdom, prompting the company to notify British law enforcement about the incident. Reports suggest that the hackers exploited vulnerabilities in DebugBear, a web analytics tool utilized by Polymarket.

DebugBear acknowledged the incident on X, mentioning that it was facing an ongoing security issue. Meanwhile, crypto news outlet The Block reported that approximately $2.65 million in cryptocurrency may have been stolen from users' wallets, as outlined by blockchain analysis firm Arkham. However, a representative from Polymarket refrained from commenting on this figure or the specifics of how the attack unfolded.

Trading Resumption and Security Measures

Trading resumed at 3 p.m. ET after the platform had been offline for about an hour. Notably, Polymarket's U.S.-based platform was not impacted during this incident.

This incident underscores the growing trend of cybercriminals targeting third-party vendors to infiltrate larger platforms. The breach's successful nature marks a pivotal moment for Polymarket as it navigates these challenges.

Platform's Growth and Regulatory Landscape

Recently valued at $21 billion following a significant investment led by Donald Trump Jr., Polymarket handles roughly $200 million in trading activity daily. This growth has made it a focal point in the ongoing regulatory debate surrounding prediction markets in the U.S., especially as the Trump administration and various states vie for control over such platforms.

The platform is also grappling with potential insider trading activities. Reports emerged earlier on the same day about suspicious betting patterns, particularly linked to the contentious elections in Israel and the upcoming U.S. midterms. Shana Bautista, Polymarket’s head of global intelligence and investigations, confirmed that the company is actively looking into these anomalies.
