Transforming the Power Supply Landscape

Batteries have revolutionized how we use electronics, empowering a wide range of devices from smartphones to smartwatches. However, the reality remains that all batteries eventually deplete their charge.

But what if this cycle could be broken? RadianX, a promising startup, envisions a future where portable devices operate indefinitely without needing a power source replacement. The breakthrough lies in their advanced solar panels, made from a revolutionary material known as perovskite.

Efficiency Inside and Out

RadianX claims their new solar technology excels at harnessing light both outdoors and, notably, indoors. Co-founder and COO Josh Douglas stated, “We can harvest any kind of photon, whether it’s an outdoor or indoor photon, and keep the device running longer — or running forever.”

This indoor efficiency opens up possibilities for what RadianX terms “edge energy.” Imagine an e-reader that never requires charging or an IoT device that never needs battery replacements. Beyond these obvious applications, the potential for innovative uses is vast, including long-lasting robots and wearable technology that has historically been limited by battery life.

Funding and Future Aspirations

To propel their vision into reality, RadianX successfully secured $5 million in a seed funding round led by SOSV and Twynam. Other investors included One Small Planet, Sachsen Ventures, Avila VC, California Innovation Fund, quantumEDGE, Riceberg Ventures, and Alumni Ventures. Additionally, Pacific Union Technology Precision Manufacturing is contributing $4 million in non-dilutive investment aimed at establishing a production line for RadianX’s innovative solar panels.

While solar-powered devices are not a novel concept—think of calculators that run on solar energy—the advancement in technology had stalled due to the high energy demands of recent devices.

A New Dawn for Solar Materials

According to RadianX’s CEO Vivian Qu, the significance of perovskites lies in their ability to deliver high power density, setting them apart from conventional solar materials. Although perovskites have faced challenges in cost and durability compared to standard silicon-based panels, advancements have made them a compelling option.

RadianX’s solar panel, measuring 1.2 meters by 0.6 meters, boasts an impressive light harvesting efficiency of 22.33%, marking a new benchmark in solar technology.

Durability concerns are less critical for RadianX, as their primary focus targets indoor applications where wear-and-tear is minimal. The panels can be manufactured thin, at just 0.7 millimeters, enabling them to fit seamlessly into various devices.

Innovative Power Solutions

To maximize power output, RadianX is also creating power electronics specifically designed for their perovskite technology. Existing electronic components are generally optimized for silicon layers, which have different light absorption properties.

Rather than simply selling standalone solar panels, RadianX’s strategy involves packaging their technology into comprehensive solutions for device manufacturers, easing the integration process. “RadianX is trying to package all of this and sell this to device makers as something they don’t need to worry about,” Qu explained.

Ultimately, RadianX aims to see its technology implemented across various devices, ranging from e-readers to industrial sensors, with dozens of untapped possibilities likely emerging as they innovate.
