Strengthening Community: Seventh-day Adventists Gather in the Middle East

Gathering of Faithful Leaders

On October 10, a significant assembly took place, bringing together a mix of Seventh-day Adventist leaders, ex-missionaries, retirees, and representatives from the General Conference. This annual event focused on rekindling connections and sharing experiences while highlighting the church's ongoing contributions in the Middle East and North Africa.

Reflecting on the Past and Looking Ahead

Participants were invited to reminisce as they viewed a collection of photographs from previous missionary endeavors. These visual memories recounted the journeys taken and the communities impacted by the Adventist faith. However, the event was equally about future aspirations, showcasing the growth of new church plants, potential mission opportunities, and advancements at Middle East University.

Addressing Challenges and Embracing Opportunities

Denis Sand, the president of the Middle East and North Africa Union Mission (MENAUM), spoke to those present about the various challenges faced by the region. Despite the difficulties, he expressed optimism about the new pathways emerging for outreach and sharing the message of Jesus Christ.

Currently, the union consists of approximately 7,000 Seventh-day Adventists spread across 19 nations. Many of these areas have limited or no Adventist representation. To counteract this, Sand highlighted four critical focus areas: mission expansion, leadership development, Adventist discipleship, and nurturing the next generation. Plans currently involve over 50 church-planting initiatives, efforts to train effective church-planting teams, and securing land for future congregations.

“Mission is expanding in many ways,” Sand noted, highlighting the church’s evolving efforts.

The Ongoing Call for Workers

Despite the evident progress, the demand for additional workers in the region persists. Sand referenced a passage from Luke 10:2, which speaks of the plentiful harvest and the urgent need for laborers. He urged all attendees to take a moment each day at 10:02 AM to pray for more individuals willing to commit to service within the Middle East.

Updates at Middle East University

Participants also learned about Middle East University, which currently enrolls nearly 150 students. Updates included plans for land management involving farming and agricultural projects, alongside the installation of additional solar panels to enhance sustainability. Attendees were motivated to leverage their networks to encourage youths to consider enrollment at the university.

Engaging Activities and Community Support

A moment of levity occurred during the event with a Kahoot quiz, which added an element of fun to the gathering. Moreover, attendees were provided with avenues to contribute financially to both MENAUM’s goals and initiatives at Middle East University.

The event culminated in a communal dinner, allowing former missionaries, retirees, and church leaders to continue their conversations, share stories, and strengthen their bonds.
