New Deregulation for Methane Emissions

In a controversial move, the Trump administration is planning to ease regulations that aim to control methane leaks, a significant pollutant associated with oil and gas operations. This decision is expected to be officially announced today at a campaign rally in Lubbock, Texas.

The Impact of Methane

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, contributing up to 30% of current global warming impacts. With the ability to trap heat in the atmosphere significantly more effectively than carbon dioxide—up to 80 times more potent over a 20-year span—methane's role in accelerating climate change is alarming. Unlike CO2, which can remain in the atmosphere for centuries, methane typically dissipates within a decade, making its control critical for mitigating global temperature rises.

Regulatory Rollbacks by the EPA

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) intends to revisit previously established rules designed to curb methane leaks. This is part of a deregulatory effort by the Trump administration, reversing the Biden-era regulations that targeted an 80% reduction in methane emissions over 14 years.

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin stated that the rollback will result in significant savings for the oil and gas industry, around $45 billion, while the existing regulations would have posed compliance costs of about $18 billion. Zeldin emphasized the
