Soon, Walmart will allow AI agents to assist you with online shopping, providing a new level of convenience and control.

Walmart Welcomes AI Agents to Enhance Your Shopping Experience

Walmart is preparing to launch a new feature that will allow AI agents to shop on its website on behalf of customers. This initiative will take effect next month, offering shoppers a modern approach to online retail.

AI Shopping: A New Frontier

As Walmart embraces this technology, it stands apart from competitors like Amazon, which has recently denied access to AI shopping assistants such as Perplexity and Meta’s Muse AI. Walmart's welcoming stance on AI agents is accompanied by clear guidelines to ensure that these digital assistants align with shoppers’ intentions.

How It Works

The AI agents will operate through dedicated “Agent Profiles” linked to customers' Walmart accounts. Initially set to require approval for all purchases made by the agent, customers will also have the option to set specific spending limits, allowing AI agents to shop with predetermined budgets—like $100 or less.

After purchases, customers will be able to review items selected by the AI separately from their own purchases, offering an organized way to manage their shopping experience. Additionally, users retain the ability to deactivate the AI agent whenever they wish.

Agent Gateway and Privacy

Walmart has introduced an “Agent Gateway,” currently in beta, which facilitates the interaction between AI agents and its platform. Employing the Model Context Protocol, this open standard enables AI agents to function smoothly, avoiding potential browser navigation issues.

Crucially, the system is designed to safeguard customer privacy. For example, if a customer habitually purchases items like sourdough bread or a favorite brand of milk, the AI can identify these preferences without being granted access to the customer's complete shopping history.

Furthermore, Walmart has reaffirmed that any AI agents that fail to adhere to its guidelines will be banned from the platform. These rules stipulate that agents cannot perform actions beyond what the customer intends nor alter payment methods.

The initiative doesn’t stop with Walmart.com; it extends to Sam’s Club, allowing members to utilize AI agents for their shopping needs as well.
